        | Ambystoma tigrinum, the Tiger salamander, is one of the largest
terrestrial salamanders in North America, growing to up to 20 cm
long. As adults they are exclusively terrestrial, burrowing deep
into loose soil, and only returning to the water to breed; however
in particularly poor terrestrial environments they may forego
metamorphosis and become sexually mature in their larval form. They
are most commonly found on the Atlantic coast between New York and
Florida. The question of whether the Barred, California, and
Plateau subpopulations of Tiger salamander constitute separate
species is still an active area of research. | | | |
