Entrez Taxonomy

        | Thylacinus cynocephalus is the only member of the Thylacinidae
family. It is believed to be extinct, with the last known live
animal captured in 1930 and the last captive animal dying in 1936.
It resembled a large dog with a stiff tail and had striped markings
on its hindquarters, leading to the common name "Tasmanian tiger".
Its original habitat stretched from New Guinea through Australia and
Tasmania, but indigenous populations and the dingo led to its
probable extinction across all of its range, with the exception of
Tasmania, by the time of the arrival of European explorers. The
animal presented here died in captivity in the Berlin Zoo in 1880. | | | |
